Greg Keys is sharpening his mind and business acumen at the College of Charleston. But lately, it’s his face getting all the attention.

CofC junior Greg Keys appears with Darius Rucker in the music video for “Homegrown Honey.”
That’s Keys in country music star Darius Rucker’s new music video for the hit single “Homegrown Honey.” Keys appears in the video as a “friend” of Rucker’s, his arm draped around the Hootie & the Blowfish frontman.

Keys, a junior business administration major and psychology minor, was invited to the video shoot through his modeling agency, Tout Talent in Mt. Pleasant.

“The whole video was shot at Coastal Carolina, and I actually was given no previous instructions on what to do at my part,” says Keys. “We were just told to interact with him as he passed by, and since I heard the song about a thousand times that day I thought I would just throw my arm around him and start singing along with him.”

An added perk was that Keys got to meet the singer and his family as well as sit in the front row at a concert Rucker played later that night.

“It was an amazing process and such a fun night for all of us involved,” says Keys.

Originally from Rochester, N.Y., Keys is no stranger to the spotlight. He’s been making a name for himself in modeling and acting. He has modeled during Charleston Fashion Week the past two years. And earlier this month, he appeared in an episode of the Bravo TV reality show “Southern Charm.”
But Keys is not just a pretty face. He’s a serious student, has been playing piano most of his life and can also belt out a tune. His musical talents helped him win the title of Mr. College of Charleston in 2014.

In fact, Keys talked about music with Rucker during breaks on the set of the music video.

“I got to talk to him about where I want to go with my career and how his music has impacted me as a fan,” Keys says. “The knowledge he spoke and the kindheartedness he had towards everyone working the video really exemplified just how great of a man Darius Rucker is.”

The College’s School of the Arts received the 2015 Elizabeth O’Neill Verner Governor’s Award for the Arts on Wednesday, May 13, 2015 at a ceremony in Columbia, S.C.

The Verner Award is South Carolina’s highest arts award and was accepted by Valerie Morris, dean of the School of the Arts.

“It is an honor that our school has been recognized for its dedicated artist-scholars, tremendous academic programming, and extensive community outreach – through its bustling schedule of cultural events and its community partnerships,” Morris said upon learning of the School of the Art’s selection by the S.C. Arts Commission. “As we celebrate the School’s 25th anniversary, this award is a testament to the positive growth and direction that we’ve strived to achieve.”

But the School of the Arts was not the only winner on Wednesday night associated with the College. Other College-related winners recognized for their contributions to the arts include:

• Terry Peterson, an education policy expert with a doctorate in education statistics and a Senior Fellow for Pre-K to 16 Improvement and Partnerships in the College’s School of Education, Health and Human Performance.
• Howe Hall Arts Infused Magnet School in Goose Creek, S.C., whose principal is College alumnus Chris Swetckie ’98. Swetckie also serves as an adjunct professor in the School of Education, Health and Human Performance.
• Hilton Head artist Aldwyth, who exhibited at the Halsey Institute in 2009. (The Halsey Institute won the Verner Award in 2012.)

Congrats to the winners!

What Your Kids Forget To Tell You

Cows roaming the Cistern? A reservoir to fight fires? The Cistern is probably one of the most iconic spots on campus, and it has quite the storied past. Now, on any given day it is filled with students catching up with each other, faculty members taking the classroom outdoors, and prospective students and tourists snapping pictures of this inspiring area of our campus. However, it hasn’t always been this way. Click here to read more about the history of the Cistern Yard.
